About

AUSTIN'S BIKE-POWERED COMPOST COMPANY

Compost Pedallers is a 100% bike-powered compost recycling program in Austin, TX that collects compostables from homes and businesses and pedals them directly to nearby urban farms and community gardens to grow more local food.

Our mission is to build a more vibrant Austin community by reducing waste, strengthening our local food system, and re-connecting neighbors to each other and the places that they live through more sustainable practices. All without burning a single drop of fossil fuel!

MORE FOOD | LESS WASTE | ZERO FOSSIL FUELS

CONNECTING THE DOTS

Compost Pedallers use a decentralized model, meaning organic resources are distributed and composted in a network of urban agricultural centers. The network consists of commercial farms as well as community, school, and backyard gardens. Each site processes the organics from its immediate surroundings with the goal of composting everything in the system as close to where it was produced as possible. This strengthens community bonds, improves soil quality, builds local economy, reduces vehicle emissions, supports local food production, and reduces water and pesticide use. Download our Guide to Community Composting here.

Step 1: Create Districts

The goal is to process organics as locally as possible with each district acting as a self-sustaining organism.

Step 2: Establish Hubs

A hub houses everything needed to manage the flow of organic resources in a surrounding district.

Step 3: Partner with CompHosts

Hosts accept donated organic material and turn it into compost to produce more local food. Check out our partners here.

Step 4: Design Biking Routes

Instead of using diesel trucks to haul organics out of our community, we use cargo bikes to shuttle these resources to nearby gardens.

BORN AND RAISED IN AUSTIN, TX

Dustin Fedako and Eric Goff partnered in 2012 to actualize this bike-powered, decentralized, composting model in Austin. They held a contest to let the community decide which neighborhood would be the first to compost. On December 5, 2012, Compost Pedallers geared up for their inaugural compost collection from just over 30 residential homes in Cherrywood. Today, we proudly serve nearly 500 members and have composted over 250,000 pounds. Here is to the next 250,000 pounds!

Compost Pedallers was started by people who love their city and care about its future. Together with our members and partners, we are growing a community composting network to transform Austin into a greener and more fertile city.

MY BIG IDEA

WE USE BIKES TO TURN WASTE INTO FOOD

We use tricycles to shuttle organics from homes and businesses to nearby gardens. Biking keeps resources local, creates loca jobs, eliminates fossil fuel emissions, and maximizes efficiency. To learn more about our trikes, download our fact sheet here.

APPLE CORE VALUES

So much more than a buzz word, sustainability is at the core of everything we do.

To us, sustainability means responsible management of our resource base to ensure a high quality of life for all future generations.  Our goal is to build a closed-loop food system that is capable of sustaining itself, and the people it supports, indefinitely. This requires a fundamental shift in thinking, one that takes its cues from nature and focuses on building highly connected and adaptable decentralized networks. Nature does not make waste, so we don't either.

When people come together, amazing things happen.

First and foremost, Compost Pedallers exist to enrich the communities that we serve and help them grow.  We understand that a connected community is a healthy community, and are always looking for ways to better connect our members to each other, their food, and the places they live. Think we're just growing soil? Think again.

We believe in the power of simple solutions.

We all want to do the right thing, but in an increasingly complex world, it's getting harder to stick to our values. Wouldn't it be great if the "right thing" was also the easiest thing? We think so. That's why we are committed to simplifying sustainability for our members.

Composting is the act of creating life out of the absence of life.

We pair this inherently creative process with a commitment to constantly challenging the status quo. Creativity also means infusing our personality into everything we do to keep things colorful for everyone. Who says saving the world can't be fun?
